Welcome to this week’s Monday Musings where we take a look at note worthy postings and updates.
In the Apartment Prepper household. This week the ” preserving eggsperiment” (sorry, couldn’t resist) is still underway. So far no changes noted in the eggs as far as smell or appearance. In another week I will test for freshness and will keep checking weekly. I may find another method to preserve eggs and test that as well. This week I am looking at Introduction to Candle Making with Marie Kauffman to see if candle making is a feasible project for me, and I will be posting my review of the DVD soon.
For coffee lovers only If the power goes out, I’ll still want my cup o’ joe so I’ve experimented with roasting green coffee beans in a campfire popper, but here’s another way to do it How to Roast Your Own Coffee in a Stovetop Popcorn Maker from Root Simple.

Since I have my own square foot garden, I would just like to say that the “soil” requirement in the graphic is seriously understated. You are going to need triple or even quadruple the amount shown. Nice graphic though – especially the instructions for building the grid itself.
Hi Gaye, Thanks for sharing your experience on the soil requirement! Since I only have container gardens, good to hear recommendations from one who has tried it.
The basic mix works great in container pots as well. If you already have pots filled with traditional potting soil, remove about 1/3 and add some of the mix. You will be glad you did.
That is a great idea Gaye, I’ll just replace part of that soil with the basic mix. Hopefully this will help me grow more vegetables. Thanks!

Having just put mine together Saturday, I concur with Survival Woman’s (Gaye Levy) statement that one cubic foot of three ingredients is not nearly enough. You need eight cubic feet of mix to have six inches of depth in the box. What I calculated and found to work is twenty gallons ( 4 five-gallon buckets full) of each component. I strongly recommend “The New Square Foot Garden” book by Mel Barthelamew.

Eggsperiment, lol, too cute. Thanks for doing it so we don’t have to. I really hope they keep, nothing worse then the stench of a rotten egg. I can’t wait for the updates.
