Tips to Declutter Your Closet to Make Room for Emergency Supplies, Guest Post by Ronald Alexander

Keeping a closet clean can be a tough mission for any of us, but it’s especially tough when you have no experience cleaning one out and restocking it. This process can be a fun one if you know how to plan ahead and get the job done correctly.

Organizing Fundamentals

The first thing that you have to do is take a look at your closet in its present state and assess the damage. Not having a plan could end up wasting hours of valuable time, and it’s always better to get it right the first time. If you have to take a picture of your empty closet and all of the clothes that will be going back in, definitely do so because that also helps in saving up some space in case of emergency supplies like stacking up clothes that you bought from your recent shopping spree.

 Completely Empty It Out

You might not want to do it, but you need to empty your closet completely now. Being able to see the entire space without your things cluttering it up will give you a better idea of how to proceed. Not only will you get a better idea of how much space you have to work with, you’ll also get to see all of your clothes spread out in your room so you’ll know what goes where.

Organize Everything Outside of the Closet

One of the mistakes people make when organizing their closets is they try to do the sorting once they are putting everything back in the closet. If you take the time to put everything into piles, you’ll quickly know where everything is going to end up going once it’s time to put things back in the closet.

Organize Clothes on Hangers Separately

Just about all of us put our best clothes on hangers, so be sure that you don’t mix those clothes in with all of your other items. This is a good time to see if there are any clothes that don’t actually need to be hung up. In the meantime store some extra hangers for the extra supply of clothes that would come soon.

Clean the Closet

Before anything goes back into your closet, you will want to spend an hour or so cleaning every nook and cranny. This is actually the easiest part of the process, but one too many people skip.

Great Products for Your Closet

The best looking closets have accessories that both make the closet look better and make it more organized. The trick is to find the ones that work with your specific closet instead of just picking out what looks nice. You’ll want to take your time and do the necessary research before you commit to anything because these products are going to be in your closet, meaning you’ll have to look at them a lot.

Clothes Racks

What’s great about clothes racks is that they now come in any size you need so customize the size keeping in mind to make space for added clothes that would come in the future. Once you have gone over all of the dimensions of your closet you’ll have an idea of what type of clothes racks you’ll need. Some people like to use a bunch of racks to fill up the closet space, while others like to use only a couple to put their best clothes on. Whatever you decide, clothes racks are a great way to save space and make your closet look spectacular.

Shoe Racks

Some people think that shoe racks are the best space savers that you can buy for your closet. Even if you don’t agree, they definitely are a convenience that most of us can’t do without. If you’ve never had a shoe rack in your closet before, you will definitely be wowed by how much space they save and how much easier it is to organize your shoes. Not having to shuffle around on the floor for shoes anymore is always a good thing.

Storage Bins

Storage bins are great for any closet, but they’re especially great to anyone who has a ton of shirts and underwear that they need to store in their closet. You can either have the lids on or off, but either way you shouldn’t stuff them too tightly. Most bins are sturdy, so it’s okay to focus on getting ones that will look good in your closet.

Completing the Job

Once you have cleaned everything out and bought all of the storage products you need, it’s time to put everything away in an organized manner so that there is extra space as well for new clothes. You should already have your plan in place and then it’s just a matter of putting everything where it needs to go.

Everyone wants a clean closet, and now you know how easy it is. This whole process is simple as long as you follow these tips and stay organized. Just be motivated to have the most organized closet possible and chances are you will be very happy with your work.
