Avoid Holiday Food Waste

During the holidays food all around us.  Generally, food is plentiful, but there may come a time when it may not be so.  Since I started preparing, I have become more conscientious about avoiding waste.  Let’s face if you stop throwing out rotten produce, stretch your leftovers, you will need to buy less, eat out less, leaving with more cash for your emergency fund, buy storage foods or build up for your supplies. Here are some of the habits I […]

Where did all the Freeze Dried Food Go?

I saw the article “Mountain House Confirms Freeze Dried Food Shortage” over in SHTFPlan  and read it with interest.  It mentioned that many small distributors are out of Mountain House #10 cans.  The large distributors have a few cans, however, many of the popular choices such as Spaghetti with Meat Sauce (shown in the photo above) are out of stock or back ordered.  So I thought, what about MREs?  Well, I found that MREs are also out of stock at […]

My First Rifle

Today my family and I went target shooting at a local gun range.  I finally got to try out my new rifle, the U.S Survival AR-7 rifle. Why did we choose this rifle?  I admit, I am no expert with firearms.  The truth is, my husband actually did all the research about the various rifles to choose from.  After he looked at all the choices, he narrowed it down and we talked about features.  The main reasons we decided on […]

Can a Bank Glitch Ruin Your Weekend?

A few days ago, millions of people in Australia could not get access to their own money for a whole weekend.   According to news reports, a computer glitch at National Australia Bank, one of Australia’s largest banks, caused ATMs to freeze.  See article What does this have to do with us here in the US?   This can happen anywhere.  Many people rely on using debit or credit cards for daily transactions.  I used to rely on them as well.   Think […]

Is Ignorance Bliss?

While I was away on a recent business trip I met a lot of colleagues from various states.  Spending a week sequestered with these folks in conference rooms morning til night, you can’t help but get to know a few details about each others’ lives. Since we traveled up north to a state known for snow storms, I was very concerned about the weather and watched the morning and evening news on a regular basis.  However, I cannot say the […]

Welcome to the new home of The Apartment Prepper’s Blog!

Welcome to my new site!  This is the self hosted version of The Apartment Prepper, originally found on http://apartmentprepper.wordpress.com/. I am still working on the finishing touches, but I will soon be posting my new articles here.  When I became interested in preparedness while living in a small apartment earlier this year, I found that many established preparedness experts write about preparing in a bug out retreat or their own home.  There is a lot of good information out there, […]

What “The Walking Dead” Can Do for You

We started watching the new zombie series on AMC called “The Walking Dead”  I actually found out about it from reading the Walking Dead post over at TEOTWAWKI website.  Please know that the series is very intense, with much blood and gore, especially the 2nd episode.  We had the kids play in another room as the show is not appropriate for children. Now that I have covered that disclaimer, I have to admit, I actually like the show.  We had […]

Items Needed for Storing Survival Food

I am happy to be back home after being away for a week.  Now I can proceed with my bulk food storage plans. Last week, I posted about shopping for food staples such as rice, pasta, pinto beans, etc.  in “Survival Food Shopping”  We then bought the materials needed to package these foods for long-term storage.  These were purchased online as I could not find a local store that carries them: –food grade five gallon buckets with lids –1 gallon […]

Survival Food Shopping

This month’s project is to store some bulk items such as rice, flour, pinto beans, sugar etc. I was originally hoping to participate with the local Latter Day Saints (LDS) Cannery that I had found out about after doing a search for mylar bags and bulk food storage.  I called them and found out information and pricing.  The facility is about an hour away, but it sounded good so I planned to go as the prices were very reasonable.  You […]
