Krav Maga Tactical Survival by Gershon Ben Keren is about using Krav Maga techniques in real life situations.  It is all about evaluating a dangerous situation and neutralizing attackers before they get the upper hand.

As a reader who knows very little about Krav Maga, I thought the book was very interesting.  I liked the section on Armed and Unarmed Self Defense Scenarios.  The author goes over how an angry person responds and also talks about de-escalation.  Admittedly, though I have fortunately never faced such situation, I thought the scenarios covered were plausible.    If someone were to find themselves in the midst of an assault (whether armed or unarmed),  firearm or knife attack, hostage situation, etc. it would certainly be good to have an idea what to do.

Visually, the books is nicely presented, with glossy pages and full color photos.  The pictures are quite detailed, showing step by step moves.  The tone is no nonsense and practical.

Although reading about techniques is not a substitute for taking an actual class, the book gives a great background and would be a good supplement to learning from an instructor.

Whether you have an interest in finding a self defense system, or are already taking a class with an instructor, Krav Maga Tactical Survival is a good book to read.

  1. As someone with Multiple Sclerosis, I know I’m seen as a easy target when out in public. Watching my surrounding, and showing that I’m paying attention, will only go so far, for so long. I need to know what to do when I, inevitably, end up in a situation that calls for self defense.

  2. On my daily walks I keep pepper spray within reach and it’s something I feel comfortable using. I’d like to get trained in other self-defense tactics besides guns, since we have some mentally ill folks here in the Arts District of Hollywood. Handling angry and mentally ill people is definitely a good topic to read about and understand.

  3. Being an older female, I know I am seen as weak and vulnerable. I have been checking into self-defense programs lately. This could be my answer.

    1. Hi, Catherine,

You should also check out the SEPS Women’s Self Defense online resource site developed by Gershon Ben Keren (author of the above book). The site is free, and contains a lot of information on predicting, preventing, and avoiding violence, through understanding the processes undertaken by predators, etc. You can find it here: http://www.womensselfdefense-seps.com

  4. I guess my favored method of self-defense would be to scream at the top of my lungs and kick/punch/bite/claw etc. I would definitely read this book with the intention of being better equipped to defend myself.
