What are LRPs?

Everyone has heard about MREs (Meals Ready to Eat) as storage food used by the U.S. military.  I recently came across an alternative, called LRPs (pronouced “lurps”) that are supposed to be even more portable than MREs. What are LRPs?  Basically, it’s a freeze dried food packet used by the military. LRP stands for “Long Range Patrol.”  They are “extended life” rations intended for military personnel who are usually sent into out in the field.   Since they may be carried […]

Taste Test: THRIVE Freeze Dried Chicken

This week I am reviewing Thrive Freeze Dried White Meat Chopped Chicken, courtesy of Misty Marsh over at Your Own Home Store.  I am very interested in freeze dried meats, as my current food storage is low on meat items. I made Chopped Chicken Salad using the following recipe: Ingredients: 3/4 cup Thrive Freeze Dried Chopped Chicken 1/4 cup Thrive celery 1/8  cup Thrive onion1 1/2 cups water 1/4 cup mayonnaise Salt and pepper to taste Bring water in a […]

More Fun with Freeze Dried Food

Yesterday I posted about pan frying the Thrive Dehydrated Roast Beef.  This was the “if I am out in the wilderness and have no other ingredients” part of the test. In today’s post I wanted to see if this is a product that I would stock on a normal basis, as a possible ingredient for a quick dinner, or as an emergency meal when the power is out. I started out the same way:  rehydrate the beef in some hot […]

Taste Test: THRIVE Freeze Dried Roast Beef

Today I got to test out something I have been curious about for quite some time:  freeze dried roast beef.  Misty McBride who runs Your Own Home Store blog sent me a sample of Thrive Freeze Dried Roast Beef and I am pleased to offer an objective taste test. For anyone like me who as never seen freeze dried roast beef, I took lots of pictures so you know what it looks like before and after cooking. Here is what […]

Mountain House Spaghetti with Meat Sauce

It’s been a while since we tested a freeze dried food selection so now is a good time to try one out.  We’ve had a busy week and needed something quick to eat without stopping for fast food.  So we opted to try something we already had in the pantry:  Mountain House Spaghetti with Meat Sauce.Instructions were simple:  Remove the oxygen absorber, add two cups of boiling water.  Stir, seal, then let stand for about 9-10 minutes. I know from […]

Taste Test: Backpacker’s Pantry Chili Mac with Beef

Time for another taste test.  This time, we picked up Chili Mac with Beef by Backpackers Pantry.  We like to try out prepared freeze dried food from time to time to see if it would be a good addition to our emergency food stash. The Chili Mac was super easy to prepare:  after you remove the oxygen absorber, add the specified amount of boiling water and let stand for a few minutes. It looked too soupy for a macaroni dish […]

Taste Test: Backpacker’s Pantry Pad Thai

It’s been a while since I reviewed a prepackaged freeze dried food so I decided to be adventurous and try Backpacker’s Pantry Pad Thai.  It is a vegetarian noodle dish, and the family elected to eat other foods so I was the only one who tried it.  I was a little “iffy” about the dish at first, but since it was so easy to prepare I figured, “Why not?” The first step is to take out the peanut butter packet […]

First Freeze Dried Food

I have read that freeze-dried meals are a great addition to the food storage plan.  Mountain House is highly recommended by several websites, so we decided to give one of their meals a try.  We picked up a package of Beef Stroganoff with Noodles. Here is a photo of the contents: All you have to do is add four cups of boiling water into the package, stir and let stand for 8 to 1o minutes. Here is a picture of […]
