Just a quick post today; I just wanted to share some good information posted by a doctor from China about protecting your home from coronavirus and other germs. We’ll discuss the information shared, as well as what I am doing in my own home.

Take off outerwear

Upon entering your home, take off your jacket, scarf or any outerwear.

What I’m doing: I’ve made it a habit to change immediately from outside clothes to house clothes.

Germs can live on surfaces for a long time, so if your clothes picked up any viruses or bacteria outside, it’s best to take off those clothes and not bring them into your living area.

Take off your shoes

The doctor also stressed taking off your shoes and not wearing them inside your house.

A study published by the University of Houston showed that a lot of pathogens are carried by the bottom of shoes.

What I’m doing:  Everyone in our household started taking off our shoes as soon as we get home a long time ago. We have a shoe shelf near the entryway and change into flip flops or sandals that are only worn indoors. Another benefit to taking off your shoes is the floor stays clean for a longer time.

Clean your phone

Your cell phone picks up a lot of germs as you take it everywhere you go. The doctor recommended cleaning your phone frequently.

What I’m doing: I clean my phone every couple of days. Be careful you don’t damage it – this article gives you the steps.

Wash your hands in a specific way

I always knew you need to wash your hands for at least 20 seconds or as long as the “Happy Birthday” song. But she goes one step further.

Because she is a doctor, she washing her hands using very specific steps: washing the inside of the hands, the outside, in between fingers, knuckles, thumbs and wrists.

What I’m doing: I paid attention to the steps she took to wash her hands and now starting to wash my hands the same way.

Wipe down the faucet

She also mentioned using an alcohol wipe to clean the top of the faucet daily.

What I’m doing: I stocked up on Lysol Disinfecting Wipes I also bought some Lysol spray. Lysol is one of the few cleaners that actually lists coronavirus among the germs that it disinfects. Because many items rapidly sell out (just like N-95 masks), it’s best to stock up now before the Wuhan coronavirus becomes widespread in your area.  If nothing happens, you will still be able to protect yourself from colds and flu viruses which happens every year.

What else am I doing?

Aside from refreshing emergency supplies, this week I am reading a new book by Cat Ellis, edited by Daisy Luther: The Wuhan Coronavirus Survival Manual: How to Prepare for Pandemics and Quarantines (nCoV-2019, Covid-19 Edition)

I will provide a review in the near future.
