Just a quick Saturday post… to share something interesting I came across.

I’ve been writing this blog for 10 years, and have seen peaks and valleys in the of realm of preparedness. After the Great Recession, people were feeling unsure about the future and their finances.  Many were just looking for a way to increase security in times of uncertainty. Then came 2012 with the Mayan prophesy and the hysteria that accompanied that.  The media portrayed preppers as nutjobs and featured many extreme ones (not all) in reality shows such as Doomsday Preppers.

It’s just common sense

Through it all, the same advice applies: prepare for emergencies by having at least a week’s worth of water, food and a way to cook if the power is out, hygiene supplies, first aid, flashlights, batteries and other lighting supplies, warm blankets, pet food and back up documents.  When you’re prepared, you won’t panic if you experience a natural disaster. Even FEMA recommends at least three days worth of food and water.

Yet it is said that 60% of Americans have no emergency plan in place. People were still not getting the message. Now that the Wuhan coronavirus is spreading, many people are in a panic mode. Water and toilet paper are flying off the shelves.

Survival kits are now trendy

I saw with interest that celebrities are now endorsing a survival kit. I heard the Kardashians even unboxed a survival kit on Instagram.  A couple of “Real Housewives” as well Instagram influencers  have been posting about a survival kit called “Judy.” (Since I have not seen the kit I can’t really comment on it.)

I think it’s a good thing that celebrities are showing interest in emergency preparedness. Many more people will pay attention and get prepared as well.

It doesn’t matter whether it’s trendy or not, it’s just common sense.

Below is the video where I heard about this.
