Hunkering Down Awaiting Hurricane Harvey

Just a quick post today…  As I write this, The National Weather Service has upgraded Hurricane Harvey to a category 3 hurricane.  It is now considered a major hurricane, capable of damaging small homes and buildings.  In contrast, Hurricane Ike, which got me started on emergency preparedness was a category 2 storm, and the damage was bad enough.

We do not have an evacuation order, but businesses and schools have already announced closures starting this afternoon.

What are the first things to run out?

Because we have emergency supplies on hand, we do not need to run to the store to do panic buying of water, ice or batteries as many people in the city are doing.

I stopped by the supermarket for my normal weekly shopping trip and found many aisles are empty as you can see in my header photo.  We are seeing first hand what items are disappearing fast in an emergency.

  • Gas
  • Water
  • Ice
  • Batteries
  • Bread
  • Canned food
  • Propane

Gas stations that are still open have long lines around the block.  We are seeing throngs of cars trying to get in the grocery parking lot, honking at each other and cutting others off.

What else we are doing to prepare

In case we lose electricity and water, we are doing the following:

  • Checked our emergency supplies and brought out lighting and propane stove.
  • Make sure everything works.
  • Charging phones and battery banks.
  • Filling up water containers and bathtub.
  • Wash dishes and clothes.
  • Take showers.

We are getting calls from worried family members and have assured them we have been preparing for this.

It has started raining and the wind is picking up.   The biggest risk to our area is flooding.   I pray the city is spared from the expected power loss, flooding and damage.  We are ready and bracing for the storm.

    1. Hi Anthony, It was a long night, with high winds and hard rain, lots of debris hitting the roof. But thank God no major damage or flooding so far. But we are still in the midst of it today (Saturday). Thanks for the comment!

    1. Hi JJ, We are still under tornado warning as I write this-hoping it expires without incident. Thank you for your prayers!
