Today we are featuring Jim Cobb’s latest book, Prepper’s Survival Hacks: 50 DIY Projects for Lifesaving Gear, Gadgets and Kits.

In case you are not familiar with Jim Cobb, he has written numerous books such as Countdown to Preparedness, Prepper’s Long Term Survival Guide and many more.  You can also find him in SurvivalWeekly.com.

As regular readers know, I like DIY projects and Prepper’s Survival Hacks delivers just what is says.  You will find easy projects to complete using items that you may already have around the house or are very easy to find.  The instructions are very easy to follow.  Many of the steps include photos, giving extra guidance.  The projects are organized among the following subjects:

  • Water
  • Food Acquisition
  • Cooking
  • Fire
  • Lighting
  • Survival Kits
  • Miscellaneous

One of the quick projects I tried was “Gift Card Cordage” under Miscellaneous.  I’ve written about paracord and its uses before, and always try to keep some in the the car emergency kit or even the camping backpack.  But it is often a challenge keeping it from getting all tangled up.  Jim’s project involves using an old credit card or gift card (who doesn’t have an expired one or two?), cutting a couple of well placed notches and wrapping the cordage around it.  Easy!  I was done in a few minutes, and the result was a nicely wound paracord stash.  No more tangled up cordage!  There are 49 more projects to try and I can’t wait to try a few more.  This book puts you in a MacGyver frame of mind and that is definitely a plus in any survival situation.

I recommend picking up a few copies from Amazon for your prepper and non-prepper friends.  Beginners can ease into some of the quick projects and build confidence, and more advanced preppers will also appreciate the practical prepper hacks.  Good book!

  1. I have been hoping someone would address apartment prepping which is not easy in a 600 sq’ apartment. More, more, please !

  2. I’ve been making antler handles for ferro rods. Will sell what I can and keep others for trading. Will be expanding into other areas of the fire kit. 🙂

  3. I’m getting a real EDC bag together this season. All the sales are making it really easy! But, additional knowledge is always a plus.

  4. Put a quart can, gallon can, toilet tissue roll and some 91% alcohol in the trunk of my car for use in a cold weather emergency

  5. 17,5000w portable generator and manual transfer switch install to take the house off the grid manually when needed and not backfeed my generator when I fire it up.

  6. The project I am working on currently are Emergency Comfort bags for my little ones as well as mini bedside (or window) kits if there were ever a reason we didn’t have access to getting out of the house via the exits downstairs.

  7. Made dishwashing powder, so far so good, dishes came clean. Found recipe at Organic Prepper. Thanks for opportunity to win the book.
