A lot of people no longer use cash and rely on debit or credit cards for all purchases. I understand using cards is so much more convenient but consider having a set amount of cash on hand to help you get out of a bind.
The following article by Donna Freedman, one of my favorite personal finance writers, explains it all:
Why You Need a Cash Cache
Everyone should have some cash on hand. How do I know? There is a story behind this, which I shared with Donna in the article.
Free Chapter
Donna is giving away a FREE copy of the “Challenge Yourself to Save” chapter from her first book to anyone who asks. No strings attached; No one will try to sell you anything or add you to a mailing list. To get the chapter, just send an email to: SurvivingAndThriving (at) live (dot) com to request it. Tell Donna “The Apartment Prepper sent me.”

Any updates on your situation after Harvey?
Hey Anthony, Doing much better now, areas around still flooded but our flooding has receded. Freeways nearby still impassable, we have 2 hour traffic jams to get to places normally 30 minutes away. Hopefully things keep getting better each day. Thanks for asking.
