Ten Fast Track Tips for the Single Apartment Prepper

This post is by Bernie Carr, apartmentprepper.com Nearly a year ago when the Fukushima earthquake occurred last March I recall many apartment dwellers in Tokyo highrises posted videos about the experience.  Many of them indicated they did not have much food or water at all in their apartments, as they went out to eat all the time.   Some even showed empty refrigerators with nothing but a bottle of soda or a jar of pickles.   I would hope that more people […]

Don’t Wait ’til Springtime to Do This

It’s January, the season when it’s customary to make lofty, yet unattainable New Year’s resolutions, then inevitably break them…  I’ve done it year after year.  This year, let’s just skip the self defeating process and do something different. Let’s put our well-meaning intentions to good use:  Instead of waiting until spring to do spring cleaning, do it in January.  Whether you are just getting started to prepare for emergencies or a veteran prepper, you are bound to acquire additional supplies.  […]

Feast or Famine

After all the Black Friday and Cyber Monday sales activity, it seems there was a lot of optimism about people being willing to open their pocketbooks and spend their money.  There was such a frenzy of crazed shopping, akin to “running of the bulls” that mobs were running rampant and people got hurt trying snag “hot deals.” In the next day or so, the media was joyfully reporting that sales records were topped as a record number of shoppers opened […]

Taste Test: THRIVE Freeze Dried Roast Beef

Today I got to test out something I have been curious about for quite some time:  freeze dried roast beef.  Misty McBride who runs Your Own Home Store blog sent me a sample of Thrive Freeze Dried Roast Beef and I am pleased to offer an objective taste test. For anyone like me who as never seen freeze dried roast beef, I took lots of pictures so you know what it looks like before and after cooking. Here is what […]

Prep for Now and Not Just for Later

Last night I had a jolting reminder about preparedness.   On the previous day, we restocked our water and toilet paper storage, so I felt comfortable we were keeping up with replenishing supplies as they run low.   For dinner, we went out to eat at one of those “hole in the wall” neighborhood restaurants, a place we’ve eaten at a hundred times before.  It is usually pretty good.  This time, the dining experience didn’t turn out so well.  Before going to […]

A Casualty of the Drought

I was full of hope when I started the balcony garden in the early spring.  I had started growing herbs, tomatoes, peppers and zucchini, mostly from seed. After last year’s gardening lessons, I knew what to do.  (See Growing Vegetables in a Balcony  http://wp.me/p1dmhM-v)  I did not expect to get all my vegetables from the garden, but I did count on a harvest or two. Well, my hopes have been dashed, as the plants all dried out.  Alas, the plants […]

My Book is Now Available!

I got excited when I checked today and found that my new book, The Prepper’s Pocket Guide:  101 Easy Things You Can Do to Ready Your Home for a Disaster is now available on both Amazon and Barnes and Noble.  The last time I checked, they both showed a July 12th release date.  I wasn’t even sure it would be out by then, as the release date had been moved a few times. I wrote the book for people who […]

Backpacking Stove Test

At my last post we discussed backup cooking methods when there is no electricity http://wp.me/p1dmhM-pv.   We purchased the backpacking stove for two reasons:  we would like to go backpacking one of these days, and we also wanted a lightweight stove in case we have to evacuate in an emergency. It was still in the box with the rest of the supplies so we needed to test it.  When you are in the midst of an emergency the last thing you’d […]
