What You Can Find at a Gun Show (Besides Guns)

This post is by Bernie Carr, apartmentprepper.com Before we moved to Texas a few years ago, I had never been to a Gun Show.  Now we go a couple of times a year.   It’s fascinating to me how you can buy all sorts of things in a gun show, besides guns, ammo and accessories.  Not everyone lives in an area where gun shows are regularly available, so I thought I’d share the experience with anyone who has never attended one. […]

A Review of Holding Your Ground: Preparing for Defense if it All Falls Apart

This post is by Bernie Carr, apartmentprepper.com I just finished reading Holding Your Ground:  Preparing for Defense if it All Falls Apart.  I can safely say I have never read a book like it.  It is a manual on how to defend your home and your family in the event of a breakdown.  When I first started preparing I first focused on water, food and shelter; I will admit that defense was not on the top of my list.  Holding […]

New Season of Doomsday Preppers Premiers February 7th

I received a preview copy of the first episode of Doomsday Preppers airing on Tuesday, February 7th.   I only saw one of the shows from the last season, and posted about it here. This premier episode that I took a peek at has the same format as last season’s.  Each prepper featured has a different philosophy. The first couple had a large home made out of shipping containers and had years of food and water stored away, living a near […]

Just Go with the Flow Rates

After months of advising my relatives to get a water filtration system, one of the families finally decided to purchase one.  I had told them about the Berkey, and they thought this is what they purchased.  Well… not really. From what the family member told me, the booth at the trade show they attended had two filtration systems side by side: 1-  the clear Berkey Light, with the red food dye in the canister above, being filtered clear into the […]

What are LRPs?

Everyone has heard about MREs (Meals Ready to Eat) as storage food used by the U.S. military.  I recently came across an alternative, called LRPs (pronouced “lurps”) that are supposed to be even more portable than MREs. What are LRPs?  Basically, it’s a freeze dried food packet used by the military. LRP stands for “Long Range Patrol.”  They are “extended life” rations intended for military personnel who are usually sent into out in the field.   Since they may be carried […]

The Herb that was Grown from Trash

This post is by Bernie Carr, apartmentprepper.com This year I am going to make an effort to avoid wasting food.  I made a salad and had used up a bundle of scallions, except for the root which I had left in the refrigerator for a couple of days.  I was about to toss these soggy roots into the trash when I decided to see if they would grow back: If you have never used scallions, they have a mild onion […]

A Vaccine that can Protect You if SHTF

This post is by Bernie Carr, apartmentprepper.com Many moons ago, before I became the Apartment Prepper, I had an early Monday morning mishap.  I was preparing breakfast for the family, getting ready for work and getting the kids rounded up for school.  Yes, I was multi-tasking, something I highly recommend against doing, but that is for another post.   The night before, I had gone to a Pampered Chef party (I got some free stuff) and I was going to try […]

Preparedness and Providence

I read with interest the story about the Texas family who got trapped beneath a snow drift in New Mexico. From what I read in the story, the family appeared to have come prepared.  They had plenty of water, food, and warm clothing; supplies that any of us would have acquired.  However, as time went on, they began to lack the most crucial, yet least controllable item in the survival rule of three: air.   Luckily, they were rescued before they […]

Cost-Effective Home Security Measures for Apartments

This is a guest post by Madison Parker. The holiday season is upon us and many apartment dwellers are heading out of town to go spend time with family and friends. Despite the apartment dweller’s best intentions to be as inconspicuous about leaving their home unattended as they think they can, a burglar knows that his odds are much greater that not only will there be nobody home at an apartment during the holidays, but that these domiciles will most […]

A Food Storage Mishap that may Require a Haz Mat Suit

Several months ago, my friend Em (name has been changed to protect the not so innocent) and I recently got to talking about stocking up on food and she told me she was pretty confident she had enough food stored up.   Em has one of those large walk-in pantries that can be filled from floor to ceiling, something alien to us apartment preppers.  She is quite preparedness-minded herself; she’d been carrying around a full suitcase of backup clothes for the […]
